Let us tell you about an exciting new way to help the environment in Ireland! It's called the Deposit Return Scheme, and it's all about recycling drink containers like plastic bottles and aluminium cans. If you want, you can watch our video above!
Here's how it works: when you buy a drink in a plastic bottle or can, you'll pay a little extra money called a deposit. This deposit is like a promise that you'll bring the empty container back to the store for recycling. It's kind of like borrowing a toy from a friend and promising to give it back when you're done playing with it.
When you finish your drink, instead of throwing the empty bottle or can in the trash, you'll take it to a special machine at the store. This machine is called a reverse vending machine, and it's like a magic box that loves to eat empty containers! You'll put your bottle or can into the machine, and it will give you back the deposit money you paid earlier. It's like getting a reward for doing something good for the planet!
The Deposit Return Scheme started on February 1 2024. The deposit is 15 cents for cans and bottles from 150ml-500ml and 25 cents for plastic bottles over 500ml. That means if you buy a can of your favourite fizzy drink, you'll pay an extra 15 cents, but you'll get that money back when you return the empty can to the store.
By participating in this scheme, you'll be helping to reduce litter and waste in Ireland. Instead of ending up in landfills or as litter on the streets, the bottles and cans you return will be recycled and turned into new products. This helps to save energy, reduce pollution, and protect our environment.
It's important to remember that not all drinks will be part of the Deposit Return Scheme. Dairy products, glass containers and containers over 3 litres won't have a deposit. But for most of the drinks you enjoy, you'll be able to do your part in keeping Ireland clean!
So, next time you finish a drink, remember to save that bottle or can and bring it back to the store. Not only will you get your deposit money back, but you'll also be a hero for the environment!
